Recently I saw that the Groenlinks.nl site is running Drupal. Grenlinks (greenleft, (wiki-entry) is a left winged political party in the Netherlands. GroenLinks is the party behind the Motie Vendrk (Dutch) that states that if an Open Source en proprietary product are equally good, the government has to choose the Open Source product.(Yes, we have to make Open Source products /worse/ to get picked above proprietary software ).

By itself, the site GroenLinks is not big and does not need to be mentioned here for running Drupal. However, it is a good sign. A good sign since most semi-public bodies in the Netherlands choose local CMS-es up to now. There is not a country in the world with so many CMS-es as the Netherlands (Trideon, Smartsite, Greenvalley, MMBase etc). "Koop Nederlandse Waar" ("Buy Dutch Products") seems to be the mantra. While Content Management problems are the same all over the world, with I18N and RTL as a bonus.

So it is good to see that GroenLinks is choosing for a global answer for addressing a local problem, Drupal as the CMS of choice!

And from what I see in the market, this is only the start. A lot more Dutch sites need to be upgraded, exciting times ahead and an ideal place for the next DrupalCon?

Spreadthunderbird.com is a new sister site of
spreadfirefox.com to promote the mail client Thunderbird. Both are Drupal sites, spreadfirefox for ages, spreadthunderbird as of today. A nice clean design and a nice opensource product as well!

Ik ben niet de grotste fan van flash. Vooral omdat ik het heel vaak fout toegepast zie worden. Door bijvoorbeeld een complete flashsite te bouwen (alles in flash, een doodzonde) of de navigatie in flash (een zonde). Sommige bouwers zweren bij flash. Omdat ze de site er precies zo mooi kunnen laten uizien als ze hem gedesigned heben in hun PSD. En geen consessie te hoeven doen aan cross browser functionaliteit om beter, zich niet te hoeven houden aan HTML standaarden. Ze hoeven zich alleen te houden aan hun eigen standaarden, zonder rekening te houden met andere dan hun standaard apparaten (bijvoorbeeld mobiele telefoons) of andere dan hun standaard gebruikers (bijvoorbeeld blinde gebruikers). De designerert / webmeister kan lekker in zijn eigen wereld blijven leven, sites bouwen voor browsers in plaats van site te bouwen voor mensen.

En zolang de opdrachtgever niet begrijpt wat toekomstvastheid is, standaarden zijn en de wensen van zijn gebruikers niet kent of respecteert, komt zo'n paarse slip er nog mee weg ook.

Let wel, ik heb perse niets tegen flash. Maar gebruik het dus goed. En een van de mooiere manieren is om als webserver te kijken of de gebruiker flash heeft en indien niet vergelijkbare functionaliteit te geven middels een ander medium.

De eerste stap is dus detectie, de tweede alternatieven aanbieden. www.opgelicht.nl is in deze eerste fase. Wel detecteren of ik als iPhone gebruiker flash heb (niet dus) maar daarna niet een alternatief aanbieden. Tenzij je een niets zeggende foutpagina als alternatief ziet.
